about
The narrator of “Susan I’m Sorry” both asks for and offers forgiveness for the actions of a younger self (“I was old enough to know better, but a late bloomer”). Likewise, the inspiration for the music also came from different eras. “My 12-year-old got a keyboard for their birthday and I was trying to remember some basic technique, but all I could summon forth was bits of ‘Moonlight Sonata,’” says Leslie. A hip-hop heavyweight figured just as prominently as Beethoven in that creative process. “Leslie suggested I play like Nicki Minaj rapping,” reveals Johnny. “That was the best prompt for a guitar solo I’ve ever had.” - Kurt B Reighley
lyrics
Susan I’m Sorry
Susan I’m sorry, I was unkind
I was old enough to know better, but a late bloomer
We were both so aimless then, drinking in the cemetery, smoking
Walking down the train tracks, you in a mood, me in your tall black boots
Couldn’t get enough, no, no, that kid was bottomless
A bottomless pit, you couldn’t fill it
What was I supposed to do
I didn’t know, I didn’t know better
Susan, I’m sorry, I was afraid
Was it really me who aimed the hairspray for the lighter, and later
In my rearview mirror, watching you get smaller and smaller
I was running home to my mama
Couldn’t get enough, no, no, that kid was bottomless
A bottomless pit, you couldn’t fill it
What was I supposed to do
Didn’t know, didn’t know no better
